UK 1969 – Director: Ronald Neame
Maggie Smith won the first of her two Oscars for Best Actress for her performance of the title role in this film. It is set in the early 1930s, and she portrays a flamboyant, liberated young woman and well-meaning teacher in a private girl’s school in Edinburgh. Her extravagantly romantic ideas of life, love, art and politics impress her young pupils and win the loyalty of “her set”, but they also bring her into conflict with other staff members, particularly the conservative and strict headmistress, Miss MacKay. Running time: 116 minutes.
