Distribution Revolution
Interesting times.
Warner Brothers have announced that its 2021 slate of new releases, including high profile films, will premiere on their streaming platform HBO Max. Having tried to revive the global box office with the theatrical release of Christopher Nolan’s TENET, they have found the results underwhelming and the new hybrid model of simultaneous streaming and screening would ‘the best way for Warner Media’s motion picture business to navigate the next twelve months’.
Rival studio Universal has recently reached an agreement with US exhibitors to screen its films, whilst allowing a 17-day window before digital release.
Global box office is set to fall by an estimate 66% during 2020.
